Social Media as Creative Writing Tool
In today's generation social media has turned into a tool of creative writing in digital spaces. With all the technology we are surrounded with, social media has changed the way we create and share stories in a beneficial way in my opinion. With the various apps and sites, there are many outlets for stories to be created. These stories can be true or fictional depending on what the person feels like posting. Facebook, for example allows you to tell the story of your life, with a timeline of your pictures, statuses, achievements and memories. Instagram allows you to tell a story of your day through pictures. You can tell a story of how you are stuck in a traffic jam, or making your morning cup of coffee just through one picture. Twitter and Vine are two apps that let you choose whether you want to create a true or fictional story. On Twitter you can tell a story about event that happened to you that day, and on Vine you can give a 6 second video of an event occurring right at that moment. However both these outlets allow for fictional stories to occur too. On Twitter you can create parody accounts about people, telling fictional stories as a source of amusement or comedy. Through Vine users have created 6 second stories with a made up plot line. One of the most popular social media sites, Tumblr, has been the biggest outlet for storytelling, both fictional and true. You can create a blog about yourself, using it as a journal, or a way to show the world who you are. You can also use it to write and share stories with others, under real and fake account names. Some people may not agree that social media is a beneficial tool for creative story telling in digital spaces, but I think it is a way for us to share more with each other. With social media being a popular tool amongst millions of people throughout the world, the possibilities to create, share and explore are endless. We are able to take ideas and remix them into our own, by having these multiple outlets of creativity. The more information made available to us, the more we are able to put back out. Without social media being used as a story telling tool, the creativity in the digital world would be low and unappealing.
